A former colleague recently asked me for info relating to LTE throughput expectations in various channel fading conditions. After looking through 3GPP 36.101 I came up with the following quick summary of important points. Please feel free to provide feedback and suggest additions…
36.101 Rel.10 appendix B.2.3: Defines correlation matrices
- Low correlation indicates alpha and beta as zero, minimising MIMO correlation and therefore maximising throughput
- Notice that for medium correlation, appendix B.2.3.2 shows alpha as 30% and beta as 90%. This is because alpha is for eNodeB; beta for UE. UE gets 60% more interference because the UE antenna ports will be closer together than the eNodeB’s
- Section 8, table 8.2.1.1.1-2 shows how channel conditions affect throughput expectations
- Annex A gives the actual throughput for different scenarios
- Performance requirements in section 8 are then given as a percentage of total throughput for varying MIMO path correlations and varying channel characteristics (& fading conditions)
So the reference channels can be cross-referenced between Annex A & Section 8 to determine the minimum (conformance) performance requirements as a percentage of the throughput rates derived from Annex A, for each of the reference channel conditions
